Inspiring Students to Take Action

Course summary

This course will show you how to plan and implement social action in the classroom. In this course you will use a social action lesson from the Dying to Live curriculum package as an example of how you can guide students to create change in their community.

You will learn:

• What social action is in a classroom context.
• Why social action is important to teaching and learning.
• What the benefits of social action are to students.
• Where social action fits within the Australian Curriculum.
• Steps to implementing social action in the classroom, including problem identification, developing an action question to guide social action planning, and reflecting on and celebrating social action achievements.

Course time:

This course will take you 2 hours to complete. Enjoy it in one session or spread it out over a few weeks. You will have ongoing access via your personal dashboard.

Accreditation:

This course is mapped to the Professional Standards for Teachers. It is accredited for teacher professional development hours in the following states and territories:

Proficient Teacher – all states and territories except NSW

• 2.1 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.
• 2.2 Organise content into coherent, well-sequenced learning and teaching programs.
• 3.2 Plan and implement well-structured learning and teaching programs or lesson sequences that engage students and promote learning.
• 3.3 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem-solving and critical and creative thinking.

This course is not currently accredited in NSW (NESA). However, it can be counted toward NESA PD elective hours.

This course is accredited by TQI for 2 hours of professional development for teachers in the ACT for 2024.
